About
This is the website of Alan Ashton-Smith. I am an academic and writer based in London.
I’m currently a PhD Candidate in the London Consortium’s multi-disciplinary programme in Humanities and Cultural Studies. The subject of my thesis is Gypsy Punk – there is more about this on the ‘Thesis’ page of the website.  I also work at Imperial College London, as a Project Assistant in the Department of Chemical Engineering and a project manager in the Department of Physics.
I like to maintain an active array of supplementary interests, inside and outside of academia. These have inspired numerous writings, and presentations at conferences.  In addition, I contribute regular reviews of music to Shout4Music.com, where I am Live Music Editor, and slightly less regular reviews of books to PopMatters.com.
This site is an attempt to bring together in one space my various interests and activities. At the moment I don’t intend for this to be an all-singing all-dancing multimedia experience or a shrine to online aesthetics, so references to ‘website’ on this page might easily be changed to ‘blog with deviations’.
